fan shroud question
Ok, I can't use the search function on this silly phone. When I hit search it pulls up the advertisement above it. Is there another shroud besides the oem one that will work ( clutch fan )? TIA

I'd like to know as well. Mine broke and I havnt put it back on yet. But I have put on a new 3 core rad and the jeep runs fine with out it. Even though most of you think I should put it back on...

Guess not....I posted a thread awhile back asking if my fan shroud was needed. It broke and every one said put back on. Never did. Now I'm looking for a new one or used/after market that will fit. That or ill just buy an electric can and take out my clutch fan altogether. But I didn't have a big response at all.

You definitely need the fan shroud and as far as I know there is not another one that will fit from another vehicle. I broke the top part of mine and started seeing the temp rise a bit. Repalced it and temp went back down where it should be. Shrouds help maintain proper air flow from the fan.

On my '98 ZJ, I drilled a bunch of little holes like a shoe for laces. Used tie wire to lace it back together and smeared a little JB Weld on the top. Been working like that for several years - no problem.

See I knew someone would chime in saying you need it. I know you do. But with my whole cooling system replaces and my new 3 row rad it never gets hot. Will barely go above 210. And its rare when it does. Seems fine to me. I'm just waiting till I can find me a Taurus fan.

To answer the original question, technically yes you do need the fan shroud. What happens is, when it's cracked, broken or even missing, the fan actually draws air from the engine compartment and recirculates the hot air instead of pulling it from the front of the vehicle across the radiator coils.
As far as the taurus fan is concerned, from what I've read it's a big headache. It draws way too many amps on the start up and have seen people complain that it burns out relays often. I'm sure there are some who love them as well. I almost did this mod but I found too many issues and wanted somthing lower maintenace. I actually run 2 stock XJ auxillary fans and not had a problem yet. Even with 105 degree days. I do run a 180 t-stat and keep the radiator and condensor fins clean especially after every trail ride that I encounter mud in. Air flow is the key to good cooling.
