Default Failed State Inspection

Recently a shop gave me a rejection sticker and told me my rear trailing arms are loose, how do I fix it? I've never heard of trailing arms before this. Cant find any listings for new ones on rockauto or at AutoZone.

This is on a xj cherokee right? I can't think of a part on the rear axle that would be called a trailing arm. Its just leaf springs back there. Did they mean lower or upper? There are control arms on the front axle.

That's what I thought. They told me a few other things that I knew were true, but loose trailing arms sounded like crap.

No control arms on the rear though, as far as I know the only big suspension pieces in the rear are the leaf springs.

You are correct. All that you got in the rear are 2 leaf springs and a sway bar, unless you already pulled the sway bar like so many of us do. Sounds like the shop is full of it.

BS shop with the power of the state behind it.

Not only would I find a new shop, I'd move.

If they can't adequately explain the finding, then report the shop to the state. Too many shops out there use the inspections as an excuse to drum up business. They always seem to find a bulb out and then charge $40 to replace it, or that you need a $400 brake job when they never even looked at them. Naturally, you 'll have to repay to have the inspection done if you do the work elsewhere and come back.

I find it hard to believe that they would put such on obvious lie on paper (it is on paper, right?).

Just for laughs, check the front control arm bushings, especially the rears.

After that, call 'em up and ask.

You do have an XJ, not a Grand Cherokee (ZJ) ?

If in any doubt, (and you should anyway), have a 2min look underneath the rear (XJ has leafs, ZJ has coils)

read carefully what they wrote, and ring the Service manager, explain ur a bit confused.

Be polite...if it turns out they made a "mistake"...they might just be willing to pass the vehicle without any significant protest from you..if u ask the right way

Its wise to seek the advice from a forum, so that you know what a part is named
