My 92 cherokee limited has a factory hole in the roof ( only visible from outside ) , it has a grommet and what looks to be a rubber/foam plug in it .

the cherokee does have keyless entry and overhead console with the black orb .

Your going to have to take a pic of this one. The only holes I know of in the roof from the factory are for the luggage rack rails. Where is it located on the roof?

The only thing I could think is that it was a government vehicle at some point and the CB antenna was there. My 93 was a BLM vehicle and it has a CB antenna about 1 1/2 feet back from the windshield in the middle of the roof. Is the hole basically in the center near the front, basically between the front driver and passenger area? If not there, then I'm not sure. Just a possibility.

here is a pic ... and not all jeeps were created equal from the factory , because yours has no hole , doesn't mean all have no holes . that's why im so interested in this stupid hole !

That appears to me to be a hole someone cut to install an antena or light for who nows what for. They would have removed the head liner to route the wires to the dash or fuse box,that is my 2 cents. I have seen alot of xjs and never a hole there.

Does the Jeep have a police package? Has it been used by a government agency or something? Could be a hole for running wire for lights such as sirens and so on.

looks to me like there used to be a beacon there, probably with a magnetic mount and they cut a hole to run the wires.

otherwise, like everyone else i have never seen that on an xj before, i also agree with the whale comment
