EVERYTHING! If it's exposed to salt, the muffler goes first, followed by all the piping from behind the cat to the stainless steel tip (which is all that's left after a few years of salt exposure!). These comments are based on Dynomax super turbo cat backs on my 96 XJ, my 99 XJ, and my 88 Dodge PowerRam. All three of these exhausts lasted about 3-5 years. They sound great, though.

No offense but when I read that post I couldn't stop laughing. And for the post above his, for the salt, if you spray the muffler with a garden hose after winter(and when the muffler and pipe arent hot.) it will clean the salt off, makin it last a few more years. Trick I learned from a friend of mine. Oh, and on my xj the WHOLE exhaust system is rusted as in the manifold, downtube, cat. converter, pipe, muffler; and theres a hole in the muffler I can fit 4 fingers into, but its the width of the muffler. Im in the process of restoring it. But with all that exhaust stuff, it sounds pretty awesome.

I did spray the underside at carwashes and at home, paying particular attention to the exhaust. I'm sure it helped a little, but it certainly didn't prevent it rusting out after a 3-5 years. There's some rust on the frame of the '88 PowerRam but no rust on the underside of either the '97 or '99 Cherokees, just rusted out Dynomax cat back systems.

A friend of mine has a '97 Dodge neon and he replaced its 7 year old original exhaust with a Dynomax cat back system because he wanted a throatier sound. Well, he got the throatier sound but the Dynomax rusted out after 3 years. The original Mopar exhaust is still in his garage and has minimal rust after having been on the car for 7 years. He's gonna remove the 3 year old rusted out Dynomax and reinstall the original Mopar exhaust this fall. He treated both exhausts the same, so you can't say it was because he didn't wash his Dynomax exhaust.

The Mopar is likely stainless steel where as the Dynomax is Aluminized...ie it's gonna rust way faster then stainless will..If you live in highly salted areas stainless steel is the only way to go...

I agree. Unfortunately, Dynomax doesn't make these systems in stainless.

Nope that's cause stainless costs more..Dynomax is meant to be a budget minded exhaust system that performs well...Granted it doesn't hold up to the salt of the northern states..Nice thing about living in the south anything made of metal will last much much longer..I learned long ago why many used dealers would come down south buy used cars at auction and then take em up north and sell them..why cheap down here but brings premuim bucks up north since they have no rust and have never seen those salty roads..
