You know the big dent in the exhaust downpipe, just below the manifold? Has anyone ever tried to remove it with an exhaust pipe expander? Just curious.

 

I'd almost bet the pipe needs to be removed, cut in the middle of the dent and taken to a muff shop to be expanded on their hydraulic machine.

 

Yeah, you're probably right.

 

OR! You could cut that section off and get a bent pipe a size bigger and weld it up! Then there would be NO resistance

 

I believe the next size up exhaust pipe is 1/2" larger diameter.......that would be some major welding to make up the 1/2" difference........and it better be both oh so precisely measured/welded or the 2 ends will never fit back up to the cat and manifold.

Yeah it has something to do with the air flow into the cat and w/e else.. I don't think it's necessary

I'm pretty sure aftermarket pipes do not have it.

It serves no purpose other than to improve emissions. It can be removed. There was just a thread on this a few days ago. I'll dig it up...

 

I believe that pic proves my point. Getting the end with the flange fitting to line up while getting the other end to line up with the cat may be tricky. Seems like the flange end would need to bolted up and the slip fit end fitted to the cat then welded up with it on the XJ.
