cheapest place to find a replacement manifold

its either the manifold or the gasket....sounds like its coming from the top of the motor...are they know to crack up there?

im hoping its a gasket.....but what are my options or suggestions?

Cracked exhaust manifolds are not uncommon for the 4.0. I had to replace one in the wife's '97 not long ago. It is always possible that it is the gasket only so be sure to check the manifold carefully. Mine cracked at the collector.

Some have success welding them, most do not. I tried. I failed. Your real options are to find a good used one (I did that thanks to a member here, cost me under $100) or go with new. Replacing them isn't the easiest operation as the bolts are difficult to get to with the engine mounted in the engine bay. The gasket is a combo gasket with the intake manifold, so removal of both is required. It won't be a good idea to reuse the old gasket.

Replacing the manifold with a header is another option which is only limited by your wallet.

If its a cracked manifold then be sure to examine motor mounts.

Worn motor mounts can cause a cracked manifold. And if the mount is still bad, you'll crack your new part fast...

i just ordered a replacement header...

http://www.1aauto.com/1A/ExhaustMani...46/250322/1999

from what i read, those were the best ones out there....most people suggested those when other people cracked theres.

My jeep is a commuter, very little off road, mainly just sits in the garage and i drive it on the weekends...so i think it should last a long time...with a warranty too

now suggestions on a muffler, since that has holes, im thinking dynomax ultra flow....love the low tone to it, without getting rapsy

anyone else running that or similar?

x2, they crack for a reason. While you've got the intake off is the best time to replace the drivers side mount anyway.

Not hard at all, especially if you have the intake off. A bad motor mount isn't always the cause of a cracked exhaust manifold, but it can be. It'll be pretty obvious to tell if the motor mount is good, I'm willing to bet when you pull the intake you'll see there isn't much left of the mount.

Most people have bad motor mounts and just don't realize it.

Call a parts store, ask if they have a motor mount.

Your local parts store should have them. While you're checking them check the mount to block bolts on the passenger side. IIRC the bolts are too long for the thread in the block so they tend to come loose over time. When I pulled the engine out of my 92 it only had 1 bolt left on the passenger side.
