Whenever I start my car, (first of all, it cranks a lot before starting, but never fails to start) and move it out of gear, the exhaust leaks, and when you're outside of the car, you can smell pure gasoline. I assume it means the engine isn't burning the fuel? I was told by my brother (he's no expert) that I could use a new o2 sensor. Thoughts?

Yes, if your exhaust leak is upstream of the O2 sensor, it could allow too much oxygen into your exhaust system, and cause it to run rich.
