My muffler is eroded away about an inch all the way around where the exit connects to the tailpipe. Way too loud.
I can get a used exhaust chopped off behind the cat for $50, I'm wondering if it would work to install this myself with a 2-1/2" to 2-1/4" coupler and clamps?

Try it. Nobody on here can tell you. Crawl under there and get dirty, worse case scenario is if you can't get it all mounted up you have to take it to an exhaust shop.
Side note, I have scabbed off a few exhaust systems the "band" clamps work ok. Or you can get the couplers at the parts store for only a couple bucks.

Clamps will work fine, and you don't need special tools. IF it does leak, get some exhaust putty at the local parts store. If you can't get it tight enough, one thing you can try is cut a very small notch in the larger pipe and seal that with putty. I straight piped my Jeep with basic tools.

Awesome thanks. Now I'm considering just keeping the exhaust I have chopping out the muffler and spending the money on a glasspack or a cheap turbo muffler if I can find one that fits.

IDK how the exhaust is lined up on an '89, but with my '92 the Glasspack required modifying the tailpipe to line up. My original muffler had a center input, and the output was on the left. So check it before you buy it.

I ended up pulling out the pipe where it's eroded, wrapping in aluminum foil and putting a screw clamp behind that. It sounds fine and feels pretty solid for now, I think I'll be ordering a dynomax eventually.

I know that but I think clamps and putty will be a lot better than a gaping hole for now.
