Yesterday i changed the oil put 6 quotes of oil 10w-30. Started it got it nice and hot, then checked the oil and it wasn't on the full mark. It was actually on the half way of the marking of add to full. I figured theres no way it could take more then 6 quotes. So i drove it to work and back today checked it again same place as it was yesterday. I added little bit of oil then it was perfect on the full mark. Out if nowhere i started to hear a lifter noise. (Sounds like i can hear the cam shaft making contact with the lifter.) Nothing crazy but i can still hear it. Should i stress about it? It drives and runs like a champ. I have 150k miles. (4.0 inline 6 obviously. )

It could possibly be a stuck lifter.

Check the oil before you start and warm up your jeep.

If you were the one soul who didn't have some sort of valve train noise on his XJ at 150k, then props to you. I wouldn't stress, as long as you accurately described the sound :P And my 4.0 takes about 6.5 quarts to get it to the full mark as well.

I suppose that was just a joke then. In addition to what has already been said, what weight of oil was in the Jeep before this change, was it the same? I noticed a significantly less unnecessary engine noise when going from 5w-30 dino juice to 10w-30 sythetic...

I use 15-40 Rotella. Let the flaming begin!!

Jeep Engine Oil Viscosity

This was taken from pages 82 and 83 of the 1989 Chrysler/Jeep owners manual.

Selecting Engine Oil Viscosity

When changing or adding engine oil select the proper grade by using the chart on the following page. Select the grade that corresponds to the ambient temperature range you expect to encounter before your next oil change.

30*F to 100*F+ 20W-40 or 20W-50

0*F to 100*F+ 10W-30 or 10W-40

-20*F to 60*F 5W-30

lol cruiser did you really just intentionally turn this into one of those threads?

OP, what filter did you spin on when you changed the oil, and did you fill it first?

NO. It's happened, you know. Guy changes his oil and filter and all of a sudden engine noises.

And how in the hell do you pre-fill an oil filter that goes on upside down?

Oh wait, yours is sideways. Gal dang new fangled stuff......
