Default Engine Woes

So I found out the other day that the clicking sound my 2000 is making is a lovely condition know as "piston rattle." Being that this is my DD, being that i love my Cherokee its time to buy her a new heart. Ive been browsing through the web looking at various options but don't really know a whole lot about what I'm looking at.

Heres my deal. I want a new one. These 00-01 are notorious for their bad head issues and I'm not really feeling like throwing in one that could possible crack soon.

Ive looking into remans from a few places and have determined that one way or another its gonna set me back about 2gs BUT most of the motors i find HAVE the 0331 head. Is this the same bad head or is that number just a part and the heads are not made from the same cursed cast.

The hells a good brand? Ive looked into mopar, jasper and a few other randoms but honestly i know nothing about the quality of their products.

In the meantime ill be furthering my research, but i thought is put this out there and see if maybe someones got a clue for me... cause i know i sure don't

Thanks

You want the Golen 4.6L

Maybe a junkyard motor?

A stroker was a major consideration, in fact the money that i have for the motor was being saved up for a stroker kit. Unfortunately it will now go to basic engine which, looking at the bright side, will one day make a better(than some 175k engine) platform for the kit to go into. As for just buying a prebuilt stroker my 2gs falls very short.

As for the junkyard donor, the only problem i have with that is the defective 0331 head. Knowing my luck ill pull one thats just a small ways away from cracking. Its my desire to avoid using a head that was build with the bad batch of cast that came about in those years of production. If i could find the other batch, 0631 i beileve???, that would be wonderful but from what i know those are rare.

You could always pull a pre 95 head. I read somewhere that they have the best flow, but don't take my word for it.

Absolutely. The block is the same through all years, I do believe.

EDIT: I see Cruiser beat me to it... I've gotta start reading everything before I reply

Most of the 0331 heads have the cracking issue. On the later production 0331 heads, the word "TUPY" was stamped where the cracks would show up. A common misconception is that this means the head had cracks, and was fixed. Wrong, the heads with cracking issues were replaced with either the new 0331 "TUPY" heads, or given a completely different model of head with a different number. Chrysler was stupid enough to use the same "0331" number, even after fixing the production problem. So if you see and 0331 with TUPY stamped on it, then it was a late model 0331 without the common cracking issues of the regular 0331. Again, the TUPY stamp doesn't mean it was fixed through a recall of whatever, it means it was an 0331 head that was produced after the problem was fixed on the production line.
