If you spin your viscous fan (one attached to the engine) while the engine is cold, is it stiff to turn of does it freewheel?

The cold air at idle may be either low coolant or clogged heater core which doesn’t allow the coolant to flow through it as well at lower rpm.

And i can attest to the fact that some aftermarket thermostats will not let the engine warm up as quickly. I put one from NAPA in and it takes much longer now to get above 200. Unless I’m driving for a bit at a higher rpm. Mostly on cool or cold days.

I read on another post about low coolant and bought some after work, added some and it's heating better. I went through the thermostat and heater core issue a few years ago. Hopefully I'll stay warm through the winter now.

Coolant is good, doesn't leak anywhere and is full. I'm gonna start with the heater core clean out and go from there.

Figured I would report back. Swapped the thermostat (again for the third time ) but made sure to spend the extra and get the best one NAPA had, and also tested it prior to install; I also back flushed the heater core, which was nasty as he!!, and seems to be reaching temp correctly and pushing more heat out. I will probably flush the heater core one more time after running it for a few, but so far seems to be working well.

Almost 7 years ago I replaced the one in my '00 XJ with the cheap Napa one.
About 6 months ago I had to do a water pump. I took off the thermostat housing just in case it would have been in my way.
Not really sure if it would have been or not.
Anyway I bought a new Stant Superstat but was hesitant to use it. The whole bad out of the box thing.
Well decided not to and threw back in the Napa one.
So far so good.
Go figure. LOL.
