Default Engine Light Small Evap Leak Code p0442

Anyone ever get this code? I was wondering what were the most common fix (other than a gas cap). I've tried flipping the O-ring on the cap but haven't cleared it yet so I'm not sure if it took care of the problem. The gas cap looks like its in great condition though...which makes me nervous!

I have that code and also a large evap leak. I still have the light on because I have no clue how to fix it people have told me to check the coal cannister but Im not really worried about it because it has not effected anything. Ya I bought a new gas cap and I cleared the code and the light came back on 3 days later. I don't know if this helped any. If you get this problem solved I would really appreciate you telling me how to fix it because the stupid light is getting on my nerves.

I've read online to check every single hose in the evap system for any pin holes or dry rot...its a bit cold to do it now though...it really isnt affecting anything...just very annoying and I'll have to go through inspection soon.. I may try to replace the coal canister next

If replacing the gas cap fails and evidence points to leak in the EVAP system, the quickest way to find a leak is with a smoke machine.

Find a shop that has an 'EVAP approved' smoke machine. In most cases leaks can be found within 5 minutes of setup. Just make sure it's EVAP approved and they follow EVAP guidelines otherwise little things like explosions can result.

Hope this helps.

Small leak something, I'll check, but what might it cost to replace one end to the other? I just like getting things done right and done once.

I had this same error a few months ago. For me the fix was to replace the rubber hose going from the gas tank to the charcoal canister. It was very dry rotted. I just used some 3/8" fuel line with hose clamps. Once I cleared the error it never returned.

@XJersey @CMurder
Hey know this thread has been dead for some time now, but just came across it as my xj just threw 3 codes (evap system large leak, small leak, very small leak). Wondering if you guys ended up changing the charcoal canister and if that cleared the light? Thanks!

The tube running from the breather on the fuel pump down the driver's side frame rail to the engine is made from plastic not rated for gas fumes. Over time, it gets brittle and cracks or breaks. -This is the Most likely reason for the code. Look carefully along the entire tube - If you are lucky, you will see it. If not, a smoke test will tell you where the leak is. You can splice in fuel line to repair it.
