Default Engine Hose ID + Should it be replaced soon?

Hi everyone,

I would appreciate it if you helped me with this. I need to know what the hose I'm pointing to in the picture does (what fluid runs through it) and if I need to replace it soon due to its condition. That may be a stupid question but I don't know what everyone's looks like and if they all seem to be the same on 11+ year motors. I drive a 2000 XJ and it has 139,000 miles as well, if that helps.

Bottom of hose appears to be peeling and a rust layer is showing

New hose? Is there a way to patch it?

Thanks! Don't want to do anything wrong
George

That's a heater hose and the rusted part is a water pump inlet tube (it connects the heater hose to the water pump).

I wouldn't advise on fixing any of the cooling system.
Cheap replacement parts at rockauto.com.

You should get a FSM (factory service manual), would have posted the link for you but i think they took it down.

Or this.

You can get heater hose for ~$1 a foot at almost any auto parts store.

The metal pipe has to be removed with the waterpump, there is no room to unscrew it from the housing otherwise. As long as it's not leaking, leave it alone.

I'm not absolutely positive but I think the old tube could be cut above the hex and a deep socket used to remove the stub (with out removing the water pump). Then screw in a 5/8" hose barb X 3/8" MNPT brass nipple (from any hardware store) and measure/use a longer piece of 5/8" rubber heater hose.
