I have a 2001 cherokee with 4.0l and 107k mi. and have been having heat soak issues, If your experiencing a rough running vehicle after shutdown and restart its most likely a heat soak issue. theres a vaporlock issue with the #3 injector after shutdown that causes it to run like total crap until it cools off.it can also cause missfire codes. chrysler makes an injector insulation sleeve for this. part# 56028371AA thru chrysler.

A cure that Ive done and in the middle of testing (so far so good) is a heat resistant wrap for the injectors and fuel rail.

I removed the rail and tripple wrapped each injector with summit heat resistant tape good for 1500 deg
part# SUM-350114 - Summit Racing® Heat Tape $9.00 I had a roll left over from my last mustang project

i first cut the bottom wrap


and then cut down another wrap and wrapped it around the injector body twice



I may have gone overkill but cool fuel burns better am I right? I also wrapped the entire rail and the fuel lines beside the cats(thats alot of heat) with the tape.





So if your having heat soak issues it may be worth a try for all 4.0l cherokees and not just the 01 model. So far ive been having good luck. but havent worked it hard in the woods and shut it down then restarted it. so We will see

 

nice work. never experienced this issue, but looks like a good viable solution to the problem.

the only real problem I see is the injector or fuel rail being able to bleed off absorbed heat, since that insulate works both ways.

 

I guess I should have done a write up on this along time ago instead of typing the same info a million times for people, Nice work though now I don't have to do it ,nice work including the part number for the heat wrap too.
I used the heat sheild sock from dodge ( part# 56028371AA you have suggested also) and the manifold heat sheild from the dealer,also installed the FORD injectors. I also have hooked up the e-fan to run steady or I can switch it off also, and for over a year and a half I have had no issue's ( knock on wood).

 

Is it just '00-'01 XJs that have the 2 mini-cats under the intake or do '99s have them as well?

 

I had the heat soak problem bad, took to dealer and had them put a heat shield in and still did not solve it. I took heat sheath and wraped my injectors and worked great. Also have injectors out of a 10 Jeep Lib.

 

I have this problem bad. A year ago I wrapped my injectors and rail with the tape just like you did in the pics. It helped for a while but now it's getting worse.

My thought is that the injectors are getting old and can't handle the heat anymore. Has anyone fixed this problem by putting in new injectors?

Or does anyone have another suggestion?

 

Is it possible to get a heat soak issue with the #2 injector? I recently got a #2 cylinder misfire code after running my 01 for 45 minuets on a hot day +80 and shut it down for about 15 minuets. Went to start up and ran like crap while idling in reverse and smoothed out when giving it some gas. I have a heat shield type thing on the manifold but it is coming apart right under the #2 injector. Also since its only march up here in Detroit and even though its +80 we are still running the winter gas. Sorry to hijack the thread but I'm really trying to figure this out

 

i have been having this issue alot with the temp as high as 105 this year, i mau need to do that

 

I think this will help, but getting the heat out of the engine bay works better (especially on the 00-01 w/the pre-cat OVENS under the intake)...

My solution was hood vents. Your solution would be a good tie-in w/the hood vents, or running the electric fan briefly after engine shut-down. I wonder if that wrap on the injector rail will lead to metal fatigue and failure quicker... albeit it looks like your injector rail is a bit rusty so could promote faster failure, but I'm just guessing...

its better but it didnt " fully cure " the issue. but the holes in my hood sure did help out.. you could cook a hotdog after you shut it down with the heat that radiates out of the hood.

 

I have just started having this problem on my '99 and it has 180K miles on it. But I also just started having a exhaust leak on my header.... I wonder if that is where the extra heat is starting to damage my injector?? Anyway! Thank you all for the much neede info and a great place to start!!

 

I replaced a lot to help this issue, two scoops in the front, 4 vents in the rear, and changed the thermostat, replace all my throttle related electrical parts and water pump, also have a electric fan, and the fuel pump module, replace the screens in the injectors and once I also lowered the idle speed, I think all I can do now is relocate the coil I already replaced it too, but it is not the only thing the heat still gets too

 

Well, last night I replaced my cap and rotor with Mopar parts and replaced my leaking O rings on my oil filter adapter and put some heat wrap around all my injectors. It now doesn't leak, runs smooth! And I guess only time will tell if I'm still having the heat soak issue.

 

I had it get to hot today, guess I need to relocate that coil, and do a break job

 

I drive mine all day today, and with all the stops, it never had the heat soak issue. So far so good.
