Default Engine Dead!!!

got a buddy overseas in central america. he's got a 96 XJ 4.ol auto. he tells me that he starts his car fine, and when he shifts into any gear the motor will start to hesitate and eventually die. I for one has no idea what that could be. open to ANY suggestions or possible problems he's got. thanks.

Do you know if hes throwing any codes? Any recent accident or any recent excursions into the wilderness that went terribly wrong?

could it possibly be a "locked " torque converter ? this would stall the engine when put into gear.

I would think if it were idle air or throttle position, he would throw a code. My guess is its something more on the mechanical side. Probably no autozones down there either huh? What trouble shooting has he already done? Does he have factory service manuals or anything to use?

EDITED:
Have him check ALL of his grounds too. Ive seen a similar situation where 2 of 3 engine grounds were left disconnected after an engine swap, and the motor responded similarly. It wouldnt rev past a certain rpm and would just bog and die.
