Eletric fan
Do your guys electric fans run much in the warmer weather. Mine has been running if I idle for 5 mins. Didn't know if that was normal it is about 65 degrees.

Ours doesn't (not in 65 ambient).....ECU turns efan on at 218F.....think you're running a little toasty.....especially with cool 65 degree ambient. I wouldn't think with a properly functioning cooling system (all components) the motor would reach 218 in 65 ambient....somethings not right.

If your not moving air through the radiator (usually situations like idling, or slow moving traffic) the fan should kick on. Could be a mechanical fan clutch going out too.

You're fan shroud may be broken but that's not gonna make your Jeep overheat. And it's not going to make the electric fan come on either. I agree with the fan clutch as I find they are crap anyway.
1st problem is your Jeep is black. (I must say that it is a very nice looking jeep too) You and my FIL have about the exact same set up and look. Black always tends to run much hotter due to the dark color. Eventually, you"ll find that you'll need hood vents if you don't have them in already. (Hard to tell in the pic) That wont help your coolant temp just engine bay temps. But wanted to give you a heads up for the future. But it is nice to remove engine bay heat to help eliminate heat soak from starting.
I run 2 electric fans and I love it. My AC fan actually comes on less now than it did with the clutch fan in there. And that was after I tried a new clutch first. The fan clutch causes drag on the motor which makes it work harder. By installing an electric fan in its place, you drop all that drag, the motor runs easier and takes much longer for fans to be needed. I did even one better. I ran a 180 t-stat instead of the 195 and unless it's 80+ degrees outside, then fans almost never come on. Especially on the highway. Once your at a good cruising speed, the air coming through the radiator spins the fans themselves providing cooling without cycling. Now, a 180 t-stat doesn't make it run cooler, it will open earlier allowing coolant to be transfered earlier which will delay it going up to full temp kicking on the fans. It is def a good mod.

Let's give this a little thought.....the book says the ECU turns on the efan at 218F coolant temp. Why would coolant temp be reaching 218 in 5 minutes of idling when your ambient temp is a nice COOL 65 degrees.........because your XJ is black and doesn't have hood vents?????......I don't think so.
How old are cooling system components? A broken fan shroud is a weak link in the cooling system chain as well as the fan clutch could be weak, the rad could be clogged (inside & out), could be bad water pump, sticking t-stat, some combos, etc., etc. Electric fans and hood vents aren't going to solve your problem, especially in cool 65 degree weather.

That puzzles me......the standard XJ cooling system (rare) consists of only one fan (belt driven). Heavy duty cooling (2 fans) was an available option (without a/c) or if the XJ was equipped from the factory with a/c, HD cooling was standard.
My point is, especially in 50 degree weather, one fan should be plenty unless air flow is non-existent or there are other cooling system issues as well. Why would it heat to 218F (ECU efan turn-on temp) in 50F ambient unless there are other issues?
