Eletric fan
I'd like to put my two cents in. I'm reading the back and forth conversation about heating up to operating temp quickly on 50 degree weather. I'm in western pa...close to Pittsburgh. So right now we are having some 50 degree days and some a bit hotter. If I start my 96 XJ and let it idle it would take longer then 5 min to heat up for my one fan to kick on at the 218 degree mark. Thats 50-60 degrees. I have a new water pump thermostat and new coolant. Radiator coming when I get the money. But everything else is original to the cheap.150k on it almost. So I agree that your XJ is warming up too fast. Could be a clogged up rad. I flushed my rad 2 times before putting all new coolant in. Thought mine could have been clogged a bit. It helped. Only on the hot days....60-70+ days does my XJ run over 210 idling. I really don't know what exact temp its at of course but it will get a hair above the 210 mark at idle. But once its moving it goes back down. So I agree you could have a problem.

Your right. I would agree. It is hard to determine if he has a problem or not. Most likely not. If I'm driving or moving at all my XJ stays under 210. But there has been a few pretty warm days where at idle it would creep past 210 a hair. Don't think thats a problem though. I do think his warming up so fast is odd. I just did a coolant flush the other day when putting on my new water pumpband thermastat and it took longer then 5 minutes toward up. And that was with me revving it a little. Bit then again the hood was open too.

try running some coolant system flush.. on a hot summer day my fan only kicks on when im towing my boat or in stop and go traffic for a long time..and this might sound dumb...but check your fluid levels! another thing is we mightnot be talking about a cooling issue it could be a problem with the motor, if its running like crap it puts more stress on the motor and runs hotter, check your plug wires and plugs as well

To the OP.......Certain black vehicles are known to overheat....Do u have a black XJ, that overheats?....or any other black vehicle, for that matter.....If so, call the law offices of Dewey, Cheatem & Howe at 1-800-XXX-XXXX, u may be entitled to a substantial monetary sum.....but u must call soon.....time is running out.

I didnt bother reading the whole thread. Currently I only run a tuarus fan, no aux fan, and i rarely turn it on if i stay moving. Its been in the 70's here pretty consistently too. So i would say you need to do some work on the cooling system and bring it back up to par

Thanks for the info . I have put the shroud and the hole violent system is a month old and has been flushed. This only happens after driving then stoping and idling for a while. This maybe normal just need to replace fan clutch now. Thanks again

Mine did the "idle creep" too a few weeks ago. New water pump and rad did the trick for me. Pretty sure it was the pump though, my old rad wasn't bad and had been flushed and cleared out.

Since the XJ rads filler neck is offset, it's impossible to visually inspect the core interior condition.....the tanks must be removed. It can look good on the outside but still have scale build-up on the inside, regardless of flushing.

Well, a new Rad and Water pump did it nevertheless. She runs real cool like now.

3 XJ's in the family. 99, 00, and 01. All had the same set up. Lift, tires, rims, all had cooling systems done. All have the same motors. The only one that had the problem was the black one. It just retained more heat. When I searched threads for hood vents, the #1 color XJ that need them was black. Not to mention any of the guys I've met that have black ones all had the same issue. Read my original post and I was refering to assisting in removing the heat from the engine bay and warning him of a possible heat soak problem which is common on the XJ's.
Even though it would have been a little easier if we had known the condition of the cooling system, I'm glad the OP got his Jeep back and cooling again.
For future reference, when you have a joke that's only 1/2 funny, if you use it again it doesn't make it completely funny. I can see what I'm dealing with since this is a Jeep forum and you have a bike in your avatar.
