Long arms require a crossmember and extend back to the transfercase area. They allow for a higher lift and more articulation when flexed.

There are down sides to the stock arms, one being there weak, and most that pull them find that the center is rusted through to the bushing..

I'd go aftermarket uppers (Rusty's) if the fund are there. The stockers aren't all there cracked up to be..

Stock uppers can be reinforced if they are not too rusty. Cheapest thing to do is box them to make them a solid box.

then youll just blow through bushings and break either the mounts or the arms. theyre made to bend.

^^ I agree. Don't box the stock arms. Its asking for trouble. To the OP, If you already have fixed lowers, it might be an idea to get some adjustable uppers (depending on budget) so that you can have some decent castor adjustment. I've heard/read that its a good idea with a lift and by having the uppers adjustable instead of the lowers, you keep the threads, jam nuts, etc. up off the rocks.
