Default Drums

So haven't worked on a drum break since my first vehicle a '88 f250. Back breaks didn't work so tore em down and cleaned them. When u hit the peddle one side of the wheel cylinder comes out but the other one stays in until a few pumps. Then doesn't line itself back up. Getting a spring kit and rebuilding breaks, does this mean the wheel cylinder is bad too or is that how the vacuum works

Wheel cylinders are like $10 and really easy to replace. If it worries you, replace it and enjoy life-saving and operating brakes. Do both..

Pump out all the old fluid too, front and back...and replace with new...bleed out the air.

Don't risk ruin with your brakes. $200 will replace almost all of the important parts, and a small price to pay for safety of you, your loved ones and anybody else on the road.

I got everything for my 96 rear brakes for right around $80 from Napa. Drums, Shoes, wheel cylinders, spring kit and adjuster kits.

Had to replace the brake lines too, so that ran a few bucks more, but it wasn't to bad. Here's a video of what I went through.

Oh yeah no I'm not skimping on breaks. Going to rebuild them completely while I'm in there. The heap sat for 8 years before I rescued her so I'm replacing everything I can on a student budget. Just did all around shocks today brakes tomorrow

converte to rear disc! my jeep never stopped so good after I did that! thin I did the wj steering knuckles and breaks. OMG stops on a dime!

the rear disc is a good start if your replacing most everything invest a little more and just do it, you won't regret it. I built mine from a combo of jy parts and new parts. same with the front break I built a jig and everything to drill out the wj rotors.

Passenger side drops man....I'm a Chevy guy, but pretty much the axels are the only thing I'll touch from ford. That and the 96 power stroke

I know disc brakes are a lot easier to work on. But if you think rear discs are going to give you a noticeable difference on a street vehicle, think again. Rear drums will stop the vehicle just as well. More than 80% of the stopping power is up front.

If you're having problem with the rear drums, rebuild and adjust them. Drum brakes work very well when they're in good condition and correctly adjusted. I used to drive a '69 Cougar with drum brakes all around and it would stop on a dime. No, it wasn't a great setup for racing. But for daily driving, it was just fine.

If you simply hate drum brakes, fine. Go disc. But rear discs are far from necessary.
