Default Drum brakes....oh joy

So since the weather is starting to get warmer i figured hey lets check all the brakes and fluids and all that good stuff, well i pulled the drums off and its soaked in brake fluid, that explains where my brake fluid has been going the last couple of months....but to the point here, im gonna replace the linings and all that, but i was wondering whats better, to rebuild the wheel cylinders, or just buy new ones all together, the rebuild kit is super cheap, like 4 bucks per kit, wheel cylinders are like 15 bucks a piece, so if i can save a buck, that would rock

you would need to re-hone the cylinders. If it's been leaking like that the last few months chances are moisture trapped in the brake fluid due to the ruptured seals has literally eaten away at previously smooth walls of the wheel cylinder, possibly making it impossible to get a good seal even if you do re-hone the cylinder. Best just replace them with new units and save yourself a headache.

yes exactly, ive already priced all that i would need from the pick a part, its about 100 bucks, give or take a few bucks, but if i buy the whole rear drum rebuild kit from quadratec its 150 bucks, so discs make more sense anyways

Here's my re-build write up.

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f51/ho...-8-25-a-58947/

The wheel cylinders were like $8 each. totally not worth rebuilding. I replaced every single piece of the rear brake system from the proportioning valve back on my 97 for $240.

yeah i think im gonna go the disc brake swap route, to me it looks like its easier then replacing the drums haha, i just cant stand drum brakes though so thats why discs would be nice, it would make it 10 times easier to change the brakes next time i do it

If doing disc swap, grab a proportioning valve from a WJ, IIRC Itll help the rears work better.
