Default Driveline Vibrations

I'm having real bad driveline vibes in my stock '96 cherokee. They usually happen between 5 and 15mph under slow acceleration, like during stop and go traffic. Once I get to 15mph there's a tiny clunking sound and it stops. It feels like it's coming from somewhere near the transfer case. I got under it and started checking the rear drive shaft u-joints for play and found nothing, however there is a lot of play in the t-case yoke where that little rubber boot is. When I pull the driveshaft back and forth it also seems like the t-case moves a little but. It also seems like the vibrations can be set off by turning the steering wheel pretty hard when I'm accelerating out of a driveway or something. Any help? Also, for checking the u-joints, I'm checking them for play but is there anything else I should be looking for? Thanks.

is there a small dent in your drive shaft? How ae your tires, they can cause vibrations,I put some tires from another jeep on the rear an they feel like they are going to rattle my jeep apart until I get to about 30,then they are fine.

check your transmission/transfercase mount... if its bad then your driveshaft can pinch itsself sideways when turning causing the vehicle to hop or vibrations... mine would hit the floor pan if i got on the gas also... also check motor mounts... all of mine were bad...

A little more information please. Are we dealing with a lifted vehicle here? How far is the yoke sticking out of the transfer case?

I felt like mine was hitting the floor pan but I couldn't think of how that was possible. What do I check for when I look at the transmission mount? I just replaced a drivers side motor mount that was almost gone, the right hand motor mount was fine.

When you look at the mount the rubber should look good and not soak with oil,it should be about 3" tall and not compressed. Do you know how many miles since iy was changed.
Did you actually remove the right motor mount and look at it,sometimes the rubber can become unattced and cause issues.

Take and benchpress the tail end of the transfer case... if you lift the transmission off of the rubber then its bad... if you lift the rubber off of the cross member then thats bad... should be attached still both ways... also double check your motor mount... you should ALWAYS replace in pairs... do you replace one u joint and not the other? one brake pad and not the other? also make sure the bolts to the block of your motor from the motor mount are tight... mine werent and i broke 2 of them off in the block and on fell out... with the bad mounts my whol motor turned in the engine bay and stuck the fan in the radiator... can to weld the bracket holding the motor mount to the block... sucks...

The right hand motor mount was replaced by the previous owner, the left one wasn't so there's 2 new ones in there now. I did what you described when I was trying to find play in the u-joints and the t-case/transmission moved so I'll replace that. Are there any write-ups on how to replace this?

The Chilton's or Haynes manuals should have a description and/or a pictorial.

Get one of those. They pay for themselves the first time you use one.

It's an AW-4. I'm still on the fence if I'm gonna fix it myself or have a shop fix it... I'm pretty busy and I want this to go away soon. All depends on how much it costs.

and if thats for sure is your problem... if not then that could cost u more at a shop... The mount i think its like $25 or so and it would only take 15 minutes... all u need is a jack and socket set... maybe some wrenches if its tight on the high end... a shop will probly charge you for an hour which around here is about $75 and then plus parts... then if that doesnt fix your issue and its something else that is wrong also then your going to want them to find a fix it... so you spend more... cause u wont want to bring it home and search yourself if its already at a shop...
