Check the rods on the inside of door and make sure both rods are free (lock, and for the door handle.) I just had my '96 door apart yesterday and the rod to open the door was stuck on one of the brackets on the inside of the door. Got it free and sprayed everything and its fine now. Now the window doesn't work...haha. Just a suggestion

both rods move freely and i noticed the rod to open the door has no resistance it just moves back and forth and it doesn't do anything if i pull on it also i noticed the outside button on the door handle is the same way,it just presses in freely with no resistance

I got in a real bind with my 90 years ago. There is a plastic piece inside the mechanism its-self that can wear to where nothing will un-latch it. I'm over 6 feet and 270Lbs. Climbing in from the pass side, THEN, getten that dog into his seat, in summer temps was memorable.
If you open the rear door, you can see a slot in the rear of the divers door. If it were the linkage from (both) levers, I think it's possible to get in through there and activate the tab on the mechanism. In my case even that wouldn't do it as the mechanism its-self had a clamp on the pin.
By first closely looking at the passengers side, I then "plunge-cut", through the door with a saws all, and cut the pin from the frame.
I'll look for pics, (or take some more if you need). That's miserable, eh? Happy New year!, (it get's better from here!)

I waz afraid you would ask that. (Keep in mind it didn't work for me)
I'm gonna guess up. I'm pretty sure the "outside button" pulls up on it.
Not having a neat rod the right size I think I tried a standard size Phillips screwdriver. I forget if I removed the rear door....
