pull the lower part of the panel away, and remove the speaker. probably just a speaker lead, broken wire or something simple like that.
if not, it could be the wire that goes into the harness clip at the back of the stereo.
if you pull the speaker out, you'll know what colour the speaker wire for that side is.

I just had the stock 4 speaker cheapy system in my 91 XJ sport when I bought it. speakers in front doors and 2 speakers in the hatch. The left side speakers never did work. The left channel was apparently blown in the stock stereo. I now have a Sony X-plode deck and speakers, all using the original speaker wires and it all sounds great, now.

I had the drivers side door speaker go out on my 99 sport, turned out to be a corroded/ broken wire in the rubber tubing that goes from the door into the kick panel area....was a pita to find though (the front dr. side speaker was the only one not working, the other front and both backs were working, thats how i ruled out a faulty stereo) i dont have the tweeter but if all the other speakers work, and the fade and balance work on the radio i would suggest following them wires
and x2 on the sony decks, awesome stereos

My right side speakers weren't working, but I just pulled off the pass. front pane., and it ended up that the wire going to the speaker had been unplugged (rattling I think). Also I noticed that If I did not position the speakers correctly in the slot, and the terminals touched anywhere, It screwed up the whole system.
I'd say just pull off your panel. and make sure you are getting power down there.

Quick version I'll do a write up if enough people want to know.
Reference the three pictures with respect to the wiring portions.
1) remove door trim panel and speaker
2) remove kick panel.
3) Note colors of speaker wires in door.
4) locate same colors in harness inside kick panel.
5) cut wires on door side of harness and splice about 18" of wire on.
6) attach new wire to coat hanger or stout wire and feed through the rubber grommet in door.
7) Trim to length and attach OE speaker connector if using OE speakers.
8) Test to ensure speaker works.
9) Reassemble
10) enjoy.

As another idea on the wiring, when i followed one of the wires back, it connected into a plastic thing, which seemed to splice the wire....not sure what it was for...possibly a run off in for something mine didnt come with...but thats where the issue was, and i think i remember the wire comming out a diff color into the kick panel.....so actually take some time and trace the wires
