door molding removal
this is kind of a dumb question - but i want to remove the side molding on the doors that keep other doors from making dents in my door. mine are fadded and starting to come off anyway - are they just secured on there with double sided automotive tape or is there rivits or holes once i take them off?
yes i know i could refresh them and such but i just want them gone.

i took a chance and took them off last night - now iv just gotta figure out how to remove the gunk it left behind - i used a heat gun to get most of it and tried goo-gone for the residue but it took a entire bottle and 2-large rags just to get of 1-foot of the sticky mess - gotta be an easier way.

Automotive paint stores have something called an "eraser" that you put in a drill.

Get a can of 3M Adhesive Cleaner and a bunch of throw-away rags. Great, great stuff. Probably won't take 30 minutes to do the whole thing. If you haven't got all the molding removed, try fishing line...pull it tight and run it between the molding and the jeep to "cut" the adhesive tape. Cheap, quick, and you won't mess up your paint.

I went through hell and back getting mine off, there is still some black marks on the paint, won't come off, it's like it's under the clear coat, don't know how to remove it.

i first just ripped the moldings off - but the double sided tape was still on - i should have left it there but on the bottom row i sliced it very cleanly off with a rzr blade, left only residue and did not scratch the paint - gotta have a steady hand. but that residue is not budging. the top line that i left the double sided tape on i took a heat gun to and with my thumb it would just roll up into a ball - problem is i have blistered my thumb because the tape gets very hot and holds heat - but it worked pefect. now i just have the bottom line of residue and a little on the top line from wr the tape came off with the molding and left residue.

All the prior replies having given the right feedback. Either the powered eraser or lots of stuff + elbow grease. I've used both recommend the elbow grease method UNLESS you have used a 3M Stripe Off wheel before. No pre-judging but I've seen newbies really mess up with their first rodeo with the SOW. Love the look my own XJ has without the molding. HATED the sore fingers for a few days.
Good Luck!

think im gonna just sand it down and paint it black bedliner from body crease down but add a silver dividing stripe between the red on top and the black on the side. kind of want it to look like this - not trying to steel his design but it sure would help with all the tree branch's that rub down the side of the jeep and it would be easier that blistering my other thumb. im gonna use duraback M26 18 that has UV protector in it so it wont fade. iv used there products before and they are far supior to the store bought stuff.
