Anybody know if an 87 Cherokee has the two front doors and rear hatch locks keyed the same? I don't have a key for any of them, but figured I could pull the rear hatch lock cylinder, take it to a locksmith, and have them make a key for it (hoping that it will also work for the front doors, as trying to take the lock cylinder out of the doors is nearly impossible). Thanks!

 

The keys for my 89 are the same,I would imagine yours would be to.

 

Thanks! That's all the confirmation I need to pull the cylinder and have a key made. Any ideas on what that might run or what a fair price would be?

 

I think it just depends on the place,I know some that will not do it that way,and want the vin #,and make them that way,anywhere from $50 to $150.

 

yeah they should be the same.

 

dealerships can make keys for you just take the Title or bill of sale to the dealer and it will cost about 17 dollars or so i did that and it worked good for me

 

Thanks for the info. I think that sounds better than fumbling with a lock cylinder and taking it to a pricey locksmith.

 

Called my local Jeep dealership. Their parts department said that they would not be able to cut a key from the VIN as my Jeep (1987) is no longer on file. He said they only keep about 10 years on hand and then purge the records. So... I called the local locksmith and asked if they could cut a key for me. It was quite the conversation trying to explain how I bought and have been driving a vehicle with no key at all (I just pull a little lever to start it, and cannot lock the doors -- a burglar's dream! ). After the locksmith chuckled for a bit he said that they can make a key for $25 - $35 which seems reasonable. I'll be taking it to him on Friday for a couple hours to have him fab up a key.
