I think they are shorter but have not really measured them. If they are in fact shorter it is not by very much.

We could be wrong on the shafts..I was looking at my parts manual and it appears there is not specific shaft for each tcase type..So it looks like only diff is the case itself..

COS is right about the transfercases being longer for the 242 as I have a spare and could go measure it if someone has a 231 that has not been altered by a SYE that they can measure.
I just put a new DS on mine, and while I was under there I was checking everything else out. I noticed the the diff in the t-case is at the front of the case, so I don't know how this wold affect the front DS, but I would think that the back has to be a little shorter on a 242. The front one could be the same as the 231, IDK.
The "when to & when not to" comments are good stuff. I need to find this stuff out myself. On my old F-250 I could shift into 4HI "on the fly" even on dry pavement. Apparently the 231 isn't as stout as whatever was in my truck and so would break shifting into 4WD on dry pavement?? * I have the part-time Command-Trac system *
What about shifting on the fly in snow??? That's what I'll be driving through for the most part when I have it in 4WD. Also, can I drive on pavement that's only partially snow-covered, as in when the county plows the roads but only part of the road is exposed?? I don't want to destroy my 4x4 system, since that's what I bought the dang thing for! My apologies if these sound like the questions of a clueless n00b, because they are! (At least when it comes to Cherokee 4x4 systems.) Please enlighten a dense soul...
And thanks!
