does the exhaust have to exit out the back of the vehicle
i had a flex pipe connected to my muffler and it rusted off and now my exhaust is coming out right at the rear axle. Will this cause any problems when i get it inspected in NC Thanks for the answers

Carbon monoxide will travel through any crack or hole it can find and make its way into the jeep Not sure about NC inspections but it is a serious safety issue

I am in another state, but I think most states are in agreeance that it should go to the outside. Mine was broken off at the rear axle for a while, and other than this huge tumor on my eyeball, I am fine j/k - driving it that way will not kill you, unless you are doing something dangerous to begin with BUT you want to fix it ASAP. My muffler shop took mine MOST of the way back, and cut it off at a downward angle next to the rear leaf and it passes, and doesn't get smashed on rocks.

It's not as big a safety issue as you would make it seem. I had my Jeep cut off after the cat for 2 month's and while I was careful about not sitting in place too long with it running im still here to write about it. Just because it probably wont kill you however isnt an excuse to just leave it that way, I would get it correctly routed out the back, it's a good excuse for a high flow muffler to be dropped in.

As has already been mentioned, most states enforce this. I know in my state the pipe must be 14" beyond the rear most side doors. So the exact measurement may differ dependinging on whether you had a 2 door or 4 door.
