....or power steering fluid?

What does the factory recommend for the 4.0?

I use power steering fluid but I know you can use ATF. Some say ATF lubes better but I just use what's supposed to be used.

Dunno what the factory sez - don't care. I've been using ATF in power steering systems forever - one less fluid for me to keep track of.

Handy thing about ATF - you can use it to top off any oil in the vehicle, albeit temporarily. Keep one quart of engine oil and 2-3 of ATF in there, and you'll make it home.

That's because the factory wants to sell more stuff. ATF is a specialised form of hydraulic fluid (slightly moreso than power steering fluid,) and will work just fine. I've run it for years in systems running only ATF after an overhaul, and I now know it isn't antagonistic to the seals, either (a valid concern.)

ATF works fine. I think that the reason for power steering fluid is the color is different making identifying leaks easier.
