Do I to remove the front axle to replace the rear main and oil pan gasket?

Good deal! Tapered contact lip inside. Didn't mean to doubt you, but there have been some strange occurrences like that here over the years.

Take your time with installing the top section, don't join the 2 seal club like I did ! I had the top seal 3/4 of the way installed, and chipped a chunk off the OUTER EDGE, just at the last 1" left to go. Use your finger to push the seal against the crank, right before it goes in. Even till you get it all the way in ! My 99 had no lift. I put the body on the jack stands, removed both wheels and shocks, as I was replacing them anyway. To pull the pan, I left the oil pump in, just removed the one bolt on the pickup screen and tube. Then I just rotated the pickup tube towards the drivers side. Do the reverse putting it back. To make it easier to get back in, I removed the driver's side of the steering damper ! And yes, the first time is a bear !
