Default Do I need wheel spacers?

I have a stock 96 xj. I am wanting to buy a set of 16x8 wheels. I found a set and it's a 5x5 I need a 5x4.5. The guy said I could get a conversion wheel spacer. He also said I will more than likely need spacers in the back bc of off set. Is this true? I thought I would just by the wheels and put them on, glad he told me. All in put is appreciated.

I guess what I was asking is in general if I want a 16x8 wheel on the correct bolt pattern. Do I need spacers? I don't quit get the offset thing either.

Adapters are spacers.

What size tire do you plan on running on them and how much of a lift do you have?

Alright I'll say it again. When you buy adapters to fit the 5on5 it will come as a spacer. No other way. They will be 1.5 since that's all they make the adapters in.

I understand that the wheel spacer are adapters all in one. His wheels are for a jk. I want to do a 3 inch RC lift when I put tires on. They recommend 31X10.50. I didn't think abt offest and not sure what it is exactly. This is where the question started is about clearance and offset.

If you get the adapters you will be great. 31s may rub at full turn in the front but will be fine in the back. If you are going to buy rims and want 16s just get them with either 4" or3.75" of back spacing. That way when you want to go bigger you will already be set.

I found another thread on here through a search engine. It was saying the back spacing is what makes the wheels stick out. The smaller the number the more it sticks out past the fender. I have not found anything about offset. Is the jk and xj the same offset?
