Default Defroster problem

I have a 1995 Jeep Cherokee and need to know where to start looking for my problem. The defroster will blow on the floor, and will shift to the dash vent, but will not move to the top dash defroster position. It moves from floor heat to dash vent without a problem but won't shift to defrost. Has anyone else ran into this? can someone point me in the right direction on where to look? thanx

Hey Toolman, I have the Exact opposite problem, only getting heat in the Defrost setting on my 95 Cherokee as well. If/when I figure it out, I'll give you a shout!

Thanx, as i still haven't figured it out, some one told me it might be the blend door, but it's almost impossible to get at to fix.

i would get a meter and check the contacts to see if there is a break in the line. if they are good then i would check the switch because i hear that they go out alot in cherokees.

the guy with the "only blowing out defrost vents" probably has a vacuum issue. try checking the vacuum ball whether its behind the bumper or mounted under the hood somewhere either way it sounds like its either disconnected or it has a hole in it or a break in the line.

as for the OP's problem with no defrost, check the linkage and make sure its not binding somewhere or that the connectors arent broken on the heater controls behind the dash

It's not vacuum, there is plenty of it, I'll have to check the switch, never thought it would be that, as it works in the heat and vent positions.

Yep, my problem was the vacuum hose. The hose was cut right in half.

under the dash next to your gas pedal their are two vacuum switches that control the movements. one of the hoses is broken or came off.
