Default Dash Warning light help

I recently purchased a '97 XJ 2WD, it is in fairly good shape but does need a few things straightened out.

One problem is that some of the dash indicator lights do not work. The check engine (mil) light is my main concern at the moment. It does not come on when the ignition is first turned on. I have read the codes using the odometer and nothing bad shows up. I think that it may be just the bulb is loose or burned up, if it is not either of those what else might it be?

The other light that is giving me trouble is the Cruise light, sometimes it lights when the cruise is on,,,sometimes it does not light when the cruise is on. Any ideas what could be the problem?

I do plan to pull the dash and check all of the bulbs in a couple weeks, I would do it this weekend but I will be busy at a reenactment.

You're on the right track, I think. Pull that cluster and check the bulbs and the sockets. Clean with a good contact cleaner (NOT BRAKE CLEANER!!!!), and lightly coat with dielectric grease, then reassemble.

Bulbs can be bad even if they look good. Given the work it takes to get in there, and the tiny cost of new bulbs, it might be worth just replacing all of them.

Thanks,,,

I plan to replace all the bulbs with LED's in the future. So looks like it will be at least two trips into the cluster.

Requires a scanner to read codes stored in flash memory.

OBDLink.

Others like the
BAFX unit BAFX unit
(or
similar similar
) and https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.prowl.torque&hl=en(freeware). I think the OBDLink software is well worth the extra money.

Thanks for the links.

I am going with the OBDLink SX USB. I do not have the greatest phone around and would prefer to use the computer,,,larger screen,,,and if later on my needs change the invested price will me minimal.
