Default Dana 30 Center Axle disconnect

Hey all, I have a 99 Cherokee sport. I didn't notice when I bought it (was no jeep expert at the time lol), but it has a center axle disconnect. i guess before me someone swapped it?

I read in a cherokee magazine that it was disscontinued it 93'. Also have seen that the TJ's continued to use them. Not sure what's true. hoping to clear that up! Also trying to figure out what wheel hubs i have (to lazy to check ). Would this mean I have the old style?

Yes, if it has the Vacuum Disconnect on the right front axle it's an older Command Track axle. For that to function it needs...stuff, like the correct vacuum switch on the transfer case, and a switch to turn the 4WD light on. Someone may have put a solid axle in on the right, that's fine. You might pull the disco cover and look. I don't know if the hubs/caliper/rotor are different....I suppose I'd ask for parts for a 90, then compare them carefully with what's there, especially the rotors.

If it still has the fork/collar setup you may want to lock it. It will still function fine, same as the newer with it locked. I prefer mine original, but in your case you might want to lock it if it's not solid already. Here is a supper write-up on that> https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f51/fr...ss-91-a-38629/

'91 was the last year of CAD axles in Cherokees. YJ Wranglers continued to use them til production ended with model year '95 (produced into calendar year '96).

As DF said, there are a couple ways to use that axle without issues.
You may have a '92+ one-piece passenger side shift installed.
You may have something holding the shift collar in the locked position.

When I installed a TJ transfer case in my YJ, I slid the collar to the lock position and filled both vacuum ports on the motor with RTV. The collar won't slide because the air pressure can't equalize.

If 4WD works, I'd be curious which method they used. If it doesn't work, you have options.

It definately has the two piece axle shaft with collar on the right side. It had the posi lok cable kit used to engage and disengage the collar when I bought it. The vacuum was probably never hooked up. Thanks for the help guys!

That's even better. The Posi-Lok cable lets you use 2WD Low, and the kit sells for over $200

2wd low is sick, at least on the old mans F150. We did a home brew posilok on it when his actuator and fork went out. He had a blast smoking tires in the driveway lol.

Sorry for being OT. If it works good deal.

Now that's a new one. (to me at least) Clever!
