If the TC inputs match between your XJ and the YJ then yeah that will work.. The axle will FIT, physically.. But isn't the YJ axle spring-under. which means you'll have to relocated the perches.. Probably have to modify the shock mounts as well.

As far as I know, the transfer cases will interchange. But, somewhere around 90 or 91 they changed the input spline count on the transfer cases from 21 to 23.
Someone who knows more about this than me will hopefully chime in.
