Had an incident recently where I left the lights on to my '96 XJ 4.0 and killed the battery. During the jump it wouldn't start unless I gave it some gas and wouldn't stay running less I gave it gas as well. Computer eventually relearned idle after a couple times driving but to keep it running at stop signs I continued to give it gas at the same time as braking...which got me wondering. When you power brake a 4.0 what does that do to the clutch. If you can rev the motor without the wheels turning wouldn't this wear down the clutch? I'm just generally a little undereducated on how the clutch comes into play other than when shifting gears.
Thanks

On any kind of extended stop, shift quickly to neutral then keep foot on brake pedal and gas. Real fun to do this over an extended period of time; fun as PITA!
I really got on to ask what the term "power braking" means. I've seen this several times recently and am not sure. Is this where you stay on the gas while braking such as you are doing in your current situation?

"power braking" only applies to automatic transmissions, and the torque converter is basically a fluid-coupled centrifugal "clutch"---it's designed to allow the engine to run without disengaging the transmission when the vehicle stops---as pelican stated on extended stops just shift to neutral (or put it in park)

If you are having problems keeping it running after the battery was completely drained you need to put a battery charger on it. A lot of time the charging system wont charge the battery if completely drained. Try charging it and see if you still have the problem.
