Cruise Control slowly accelerates when engaged and throttle sticks when disengaged
1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4x4 Automatic 4.0L cruise control slowly accelerates when engaged and throttle sticks when disengaged. I have to keep tapping the throttle then finally it will work normally. I have lubed and checked ALL the applicable linkages. TPS is only about a year old, however, once in a while after the engine warms up and you shut off to go into a store or something, upon return when to start it will load up, sputter, and pop in the intake. Rev the engine or accelerate hard and it goes away. This is a random issue. Possibly not related to cruise control, but included just in case. Any Ideas would deeply be appreciated.

when it runs fast...if you quickly press and release gas pedal and it goes to normal then your throttle cable is sticking and needs to be replaced mine does it occasionally

A sticking cable is usually caused by a broken strand of wire catching on the inside of the cable sheath, either the cruise control cable or the throttle cable.
Okay, I will check the Cruise cable again. I thought the cruise would randomly stick if its the cable and sometimes work okay maybe. This thing I can set at say 50 mph, then it slowly creeps its way up until about 80 MPH is reached the seems to stop there. Give or take. Maybe I will just buy a cruise cable for giggles to see. The old girl is in rough shape and I am looking for another. Just wanted to do the bare minimum and make this one a snow pusher. I have owned it for over ten years. It's been a beast for years. Just use the cruise so much driving to work I thought it would be something more than a stranded cable because of how predictable and content the symptom is. I will double-check the vacuum lines again as well. I will keep you posted. Just started Wednesday to clunk hard going from Drive to Reverse and visa versa. Ugh Got my wife Lexus RX300 rear suspension all out replacing bushings, quick struts, e brake and etc. She has been driving the Jeep and is not amused LOL. Oh, and the deck on my Husky rider broke welds on 2 deck wheels today. Stuff is breaking faster than I can fix things. Thanks for the input, it is much appreciated. I will do my best to let everyone know the results.

That slowly ramping up does not sound like a stuck cable to me, but maybe.... I'd be looking at the vacuum system.
If it's just going to push snow, you could just lose the cruise control.

I’m having a similar problem with the throttle ramping up my 2000 Jeep Cherokee the throttle startS to slowly rev higher as it idles and when I press the gas pedal it stays as high as I press it and I have to turn it off. It starts out idling fine, I press the gas down and it returns to normal idle instantly. 5 min later the idle slowly starts increasing and increasing and when I press it down it won’t go back to idle. 15 min off and it starts all over again. I’ve replaced the throttle position sensor, the idle air control valve, manifold absolute sensor(map), removed and cleaned the throttle body. any ideas?
