Default Coolant Filter

Hello Everyone,

I'm interested in putting in a coolant filter into my jeep. Has anyone ever used a kit or one of those deals you can piece together at napa?

sounds like a terrible idea to restrict the coolant flow any more

that's what i was thinking
XJ's run hot as is, sounds like it would only slow coolant flow and raise engine temp....i dunno
never messed with coolant filters and don't see the reason to have one.
flush and maintain your cooling system and you shouldn't need a filter...

If it needed one, the factory would have installed them.

From the "life experience I learned on others expense" vault.....

Customer came in with a new'ish Yamaha raptor quad. It had something spliced in the coolant line. It was one of the filters you speak of. It had a mesh screen that had gotten sucked through the line and into the pump housing... The wire broke apart enough to destroy the impeller. This caused the motor to severely overheat. After a motor overhaul and new water pump the customer requested we take it off.

I am not saying this is the same case with a Jeep but just my .02c I would not do it.

Heavy epuipment and semi trucks have them, but their cooling systems are much much bigger than a Cherokee cooling system. They use a spin on filter much like an oil filter. I still don't recomend installing one on a Cherokee.

The one on the quad looked more like a couple garden hose fittings....like this

the newer macks i worked on id say in the last 8 years stopped using them .went to dexcool or long life a/f the filters had some kind of silicate in them i beleive.

They did. Only they call it something different. I think in the cherokee they call it a Heater Core.

Wow, a coolant filter....just sounds like something else to get neglected/not maintained. lol
