a bad head gasket will leek coolant into the oil galleys or be burnt in the compression chamber
check the oil for milky color

If it's not leaving as liquid from a leak, it is leaving as vapor from the exhaust as in blown head gasket.

X 2. If you're not leaking coolant, you're bruning it. Only 2 ways to lose coolant.

have the cooling system pressure tested by someone who knows their way around a car before you go doing anything serious.

A 2001 eh? Do you have the "0331" head that sometimes develops a crack?

If you have an 00 or an 01 and you have "unexplained coolant loss", the odds are quite high that you have a cracked cylinder head.

There is a known casting defect between cylinders 3-4 on that head. And the #1 symptom of a cracked 0331 head is unexplained coolant loss.

So if you have performed a comprehensive search for a leak and have found none, you likely have a cracked head and you need to educate yourself about it and do it fast. Coolant mixing with oil will toast your engine bearings and wait long enough and you'll need a rebuild or a different engine.

Instead of reinventing the wheel, read this thread.

As for the OP, welcome to the cracked 0331 head club...
Takes about a day to take the old head off, three days to get a new head from Clearwater and another day to button it all up. Total cost including replacing all gaskets and the cooling components (except radiator) ~ $700.

Actually, I've been a victim more times than I can count of the "sell it quick" club.
