Computer, ECM, ECU question
I need to replace my ECU on my 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport. Ive been asking LOTS of questions before I purchase a new one. Ive asked my mechanic, salvage yards, experienced friends that work on cars. Every time I think I know what to get I get a new question. How do I know what ECU to get? IE) Idk if my Jeep used to have security on it???
Any suggestions to guide e in the right direction?

'96 never had security built into the PCM, at least outside the UK version. The starter interlocks and alarms were separate, usually dealer-installed.
I believe you can use 96, 97 or 98. 99 made some substantial changes, and 95 was OBD 1.

If you call autocomputerexchange. and ask for a rebuilt one, they ask you for the numbers that are on the sticker on the computer. The numbers that are in the larger font. When they send the replacement one out, it will have the same numbers on it. I don't know that it's absolutely required, but its what they do. For instance, my code is 534AE, and that's what my rebuilt unit has on it. maybe if you find one at a wrecking yard with the same numbers....?
I paid $179 on ebay for the rebuilt unit.

Awesome! Thx to both of you. I didn't think I had one. One mechanic said I had some sort of west coast emissions wiring, but didn't see any signs of security. Reason I was questionable about it is because above my rearview mirror I have some weird looking device installed to my headliner. Looks like a black ball that could have been a sensor of some sort.
As far as the part numbers on the computer that's really what I needed to know. Looks like there is a bout 4 sets of numbers on the sticker.
Thanks again!

Don't bother putting money into the infrared RKE either, it never worked worth a darn.
Just point to it and tell your passengers to "keep it quiet because the Government is watching".

rrich, if you look at my profile and check out my thread about shifting problems it will explain why I want to change it. I would copy and paste it but I can't do it from the phone app. If you do however look at that thread and have any suggestions please feel free to let me know!
