Default Compatibility Question

I am looking to buy a spare Cherokee that has been in an accident for parts. I want to know what is more compatible with my 2000 Cherokee Sport Limited as far as other years go. I can find a bunch of older models but I donot know how compatible they are. I am mainly focused on drivetrain parts, engine, differential. I know this is a vague question but I know I have to replace my rear differential and that can run me more than buying a junker and swapping. I am looking to store the junker and use for parts. Any advice would be appreciated.

Drivetrain parts means 99+ but they could be pricey even for a wrecked one, JMHO.

I found a few that are not that expensive at all. Considering a rebuilt rear assembly would run $1000+, I would rather spend that on a wrecker and take the rear from it. Then, I could have some spare parts for future use. I can find some cheaper than that even. I just didn't know what years are compatible.

I have found someone selling a rear axle assembly that includes the differential I need. As far as diff.s go, it is my understanding that the way you calculate the differential ratio is you divide the amount of teeth on the the one side by the other. My mechanic says the diff on my Cherokee is 3.45 but I have only found that there are 3.55 diff for sale. Is the # rounded up from the 3.45... to 3.55? I want to be sure that there is no such thing as a 3.45 vs a 3.55. Any ideas?

You are right and your (mechanic?) is wrong. The ratios are 3.07, 3.55, 3.73 and 4.10 that I am aware of as stock. Some say a 4.56 was availble too but I have never seen one.

Well the mechanic was technically right he just used the exact number. I just found a tech spec sheet and it is the 3.55. Well, looks like I found a deal on the assembly. I'm still looking to buy another 'whole' Cherokee for parts. It's good to know what years to look out for now. Thanks.

Is that rear a Cryco 8.25 that you are buying? What seems to be wrong with your present axle?

Nothing is wrong with the axle. I just found someone selling a whole assembly. My problem lies within the rear diff. I get some rattling and humming at speeds in excess of 65mph. I've two separate mechanics say it was the rear diff. Rebuilt rear diff.s are crazy expensive and even a used one is too much. I decided to start looking for a whole junker instead. I can get one for just as much or cheaper.

I don't know what kind of axle it is. Sorry I'm new to this.

You need to find out because people give the D35s away to get them out of their way. The only other rears that late model Cherokees came with are the 8.25s and they are anywhere fron $50- $200 depending upon your local junkyard.
