I normally use a hardwood dowel.. but at the time the picture was taken, my Jeep was buried under a pile of snow.

How would the object used break? Have you ever tried to crush a round object with that kind of force? A quick twist and the oject slides right out, and the straps pass all of the force used onto each other.

im just wonderin cause id like the peace of mind that its something harder and more stiff. im also wondering if say a piece of pipe or steel rod would work too, also how big the stick or pipe or rod or whatever should be, like if im in a jam can i use a flex handle?

the point of using a stick is that its light and wont be as bad of a projectile

whowey is right. a hardwood dowel. i guess a piece of hardwood tree branch would do also. but you don't want a small piece of softwood, it'll just crush and become non existent bonding the two straps together never getting them apart.
again, you don't want to use a shackle or any metal object. a floormat would work too. any synthetic piece of material, jacket, rainjacket or newspaper, whatever.
attach them like this.
