i'm not talking bald tires, but i don't care if you only have 8/32 left on the tires, it's usually still better than most a/t's. besides, a good strap will get you unstuck.
but most here will turn their worn tires into get-me-home spares at that point.
i only said that really, cause i need new tires. mine are at around 10/32 now, but hope i can get by this season. unless i get a nice bonus.

I lived on 90 acres for over five years and during that time wheeled relentlessly.I had a 84 bronco,92 s10 blazer,96 chevy 1500,over the course of the time I lived there and I GUARANTEE I HAD OVER 100 STUCK'S AND EXTRACTION WITH CHAIN'S.And that does'nt even include the last two year's of wheeling trip's.Im also top man on a pipe crew and do all rigging on site. That includes getting all are stuck equipment out. That rigging up old massive pipes that somtimes must be jerked out of the ground.
So in short I have more expeirance than a little bit and have seen more wise tail's occur than ive herd. And during all that time Ive never seen a chain break come loose or do anything but what i wanted it to do.All the dangerous things ive seen happen have been with strap's.Ive seen several straps break, not to say chain's cant break, but I will trust my expierance over any thing i read on a web site.

Id go with synthetic rope over chain or straps anyday, if i had the money haha if its good enough for a space shuttle its good enough for me. Back to reality though , straps seem the more economical choice to me at least where I do most of my shopping, straps of high lbs are way cheaper to have than a chain of that strength, given you probably wont need a bizzilion pounds of test, And they are easy to drag through the mud being way lighter and are easire to store. Most of the "wives tales" you hear about chains, cables, or straps snaping on a pull its was improperly exectued, and do not have a dampener on the recovery item in question to absord the engery.

dude, i'd let you on with yer bald azz mickeys, but if you got stuck, you're on yer own cause you use chains and seem too proud of em to use my strap. good luck.

straps have an elastic stretch to them to aid in extraction. that's why recovery straps are a must, not tow straps or lift straps.

i'm done with arguing with you stubborn guys. use your chain, but get all the innocent, respectful wheelers away from your rig so when that 3/16 dog chain snaps, you'll only hurt yourself.

right now, we're all broke. so use someone else's strap.

all i'm doing is promoting proper recovery techniques with the correct equipment.

yeah, we got a little off topic on this thread with chains, but in all reality, a come-along isn't a recovery tool either.

go to pirate, or any other off road site and ask if chains are ok for recovery on the trail. see what they tell ya.

if you're gonna get into this sport, just use the correct equipment mang, that's all.

Everyone I know around here use chains so there aint a strap between none of us. Plus I wheel alone most of the time.

ok wow you guys are arguing like one of you cheated on the other. i carry both and i will tell you why we were leaving a trail about a year ago in good old CO. we were winding down the switch backs and saw a chevy 2500 halfway down a mountain. he had to use 2 winches a hi lift with a chain! and about 2 tree straps and my 25 foot strap. my strap snapped first then a winch cable the last thing was one winch on the front and a strap and chain with a hi lift pullin from the side. i wish i had pics but it was the only way. ya i lost a strap but the truck came back up the mountain. i only carry a 25 foot chain for dire emergencies only, but the strap is the first one to come out to be used.

Just keep it respectful guys, but feel free to voice your opinions.

FWIW, I carry both as well. I have a 30' strap, as well as some various sections of chain. You never know what the situation is that you're going to need to extract a vehicle from. I'd rather be over prepared than under, that's for sure. I honestly can't remember the last time that I used my chains, but I may have to the next time I go, who knows. I know not to jerk on them though, and would only use them as a last resort!!

you think you know it all but what training have you had
none I bet
its all old tails told from people that herd it from someone els

I'm not an expert but I bet I have more training than you

chain or strap both are good and both can be bad
if you use a chain that is to small yes it will brake
but the same is true for a strap

pirate has a lot of guys that think a lot of themselves but don't take every thing they say as Gospel

get over your self
