come alongs are fine for recovery used em lots. the problem with straps as apoesed to chain with come alongs, with only having a few feet of stroke a strap will stretch and you will lose half your stroke. check the rating on a chain, a grade8 3/8ths chain has a single pull of 7100lbs doubled up you cant break that chain.older or slightly worn straps will reduce thier integrity quickly. I work with rigging all day every day and i will trust a chain over straps any day. come alongs are good you just have to be patient

One thing i havent heard mentioned yet is synthetic rope. Lighter and stronger than cable it doesn't stetch enough to carry kinetic energy and snap dangerously like cable or chain. Sorry SeattleCrwlr but I HAVE seen 7100lbs test chain break, even when double up, given this was in a dynamic pull situation where jerking force was applied, and I wont nock chain being very strong for static lift and pull, but ive seen grade 8 chain snap and sent a link through a winshield and out the bak window. I would choose synthetic rope over chain or straps anyday, given that a 3/8" line has a 18 000lbs breaking strength. One major downer about that stuff is pretty expesive and will wear fairly quicky if graded again rock and such, though most come with a slide along protective barrier that when used properly can easily protect your rope. Holy crap i sound like a sales pich haha, prolly because Ive been trying to find the best deal on some of that stuff for my winch for the better part of a week.

Once again..... completely different loading requirements.... Rigging is static loads, recovery unless the vehicle is a dead load are dynamic loading. the use of chains in dynamic loadings is dangerous. Chain is not meant for the shock of the dynamic loadings. Well-maintained chain very rarely breaks when being used in static loading situations. But they are flat dangerous in dynamic loadings....

Common sense would be to meet some new people to go wheeling with. Then save your money and grab a winch. I'd rather do without wheeling for a while then to have a dramatic failure of a recovery system causing myself harm because I "got a good deal"
Everything has its pro's and con's. Everything can and probably will break over time if not properly cared for.
Be safe, save your money, meet some new people. Then get wheeling.

CHAINS ARE OKAY TO USE!!! ive had a HET (google it) stuck in mud with a D9 dozer (google it) on the trailer, with 3/8ths chain i was pulled out by two PLS trucks (google them) dont be afraid of chains just respect them! BTW i was in iraq when this happened and the mub was about 2.5-3ft deep
