I just got accepted to Stevenson University for the Fall. Im commuting 30 minutes each way at least 3 days a week. I need to get a list of items to upgrade and change so my Jeep is very reliable for the coming semester. I just bought this Jeep a few months ago, a 1998 Cherokee Classic with 242 TC, Dana 30/35, 4.0, and 128k.
Heres a list of my current upgrades:
-Spectre Cowl Intake
-Valve Cover Gasket
-diff fluid change
-2" BB on good tires
-newer battery
-headlight harness
-703 injectors
-hi-flow 2.5" exhaust from header back
I think I should replace my alternator just because I've been hitting big puddles of water with the Jeep. And probably my battery cables with 4 gauge wire.
Anything else I should change/look at? Thanks.

Want reliability? Regular Maintainence. That's the key.
My best friend has 340k on his stock '95, no major issues.
Once you change something, you have introduced a variable into the equation, and who knows how it will work out.
Start with fluid flush, tune up, check bearings and seals, and wash and wax it.

My upper ball joints have play in them.
I need a transmission pan to change the fluid and filter(broken drain plug).

I would clean out my intake with the Seafoam treatment. I run Lucas Fuel Injector Cleaner and Upper Cylinder Lubricant (it lubes your fuel pump, too). The Lucas stuff actually works, especially if you run two or three tanks of gas with the treatment consecutively. Buy a throttle body gasket, remove the TB, clean it out thoroughly and clean the IAC carefully. Remove and clean all the fittings on your intake manifold. You could probably pull your fuel injector rail and clean all those up. Buy new o-rings if you do that. Remove, clean, and inspect your O2 sensor(s). Replace if necessary with the NTK-branded sensor.
Do this stuff, in conjunction with the above suggested things from other members. You should get 20 mpg when you're all done. Using Royal Purple fluids will also increase mpgs. I get 24 mpg on the freeway with a 5-speed stick, and I STILL haven't done my O2 sensor. I just run Mobil 1 5W-20 full synthetic motor oil, it's $25/5qts at Wally World, which is a bargain for full synth. I haven't done any Royal Purple stuff yet, except for their fuel system cleaner currently.

If you're hitting puddles, you're going to want to set aside some money for new brake rotors, as they're eventually going to warp on you.
