if its your daily drive I would go with a cold air. No need for a snorkel just yet. A regualr cold air intake will give you just as much power as a snorkel would. However if you had to drive through a small river to get to work, then I would go with the snorkel. Otherwise go with a K&N cold air intake.

haha yea I figured. The basic point of either a cold air or snorkel is to get a better air flow to your engine. Both would do the job better than a stock air box intake. I want to get a snorkel eventually cuz I think they look sick IMO. I have a cold air on right now. A snorkel requires more modification to the xj because you have to run the air tube from outside the rig to under the hood. I guess it just depends on what you want...

Are you gonna go with a snorkel eventually? If so then I would go snorkel. Cold air intakes are pricey to turn around and put a snorkel on a year later.

Very true, my xj came with the cold air...which is falling apart . Cheap brand I guess. Which is why I want the safari snorkel .

If your XJ runs as hot as mine the only way to get cold air is to get that air cleaner out of that engine compartment! Snorkle if it was my choice.

Do a hybrid of them both. Do a search on a cowl cold air intake. Just re-route the intake into the cowl (below the front windshield)... its the best of both worlds.

Default Check this COWL cold air set-up

http://www.stu-offroad.com/engine/coldair/coldair-1.htm

This is done on a Wrangler I believe but its is an in-line six and a pretty good idea.

enjoy
