Default code p0340 but....

this is supposed to be the camshaft position sensor code. I've looked this code up on google and people are saying theyre car will stall out of no where then start back up and run for 30 min or so untill stalling out again. or it wont start at all. or it could be the crank sensor. but for me the code will come up every other month or so and when it comes up there is no difference in the way the 2000 xj runs. still starts right up, idles exactly the same, same power. should i go about changing the cam or crank sensors in the event that they finally crap out and it wont start at all? or maybe index the cam sensor? thanks

If this were my XJ, I would proceed as follows. In THIS order.

1. First, thoroughly spray the connector for the cam sensor with electrical contact cleaner (available anywhere) and add a dab of dielectric grease and reconnect. An intermittent electrical problem could exist. Inspect every inch of wiring to be sure there is not a worn wires somewhere.

2. Try indexing it (toothpick method) as the 00-01 are susceptible to this issue.

3. If neither of the above resolve the intermittent issue, I'd replace the camshaft position sensor.

found this on stumble upon. so beautiful thought i might share it. but okay thanks. ive been through quite a bit of mud and it has been raining a lot so hopefully its just the connectors that are bad.

and indexing, that just adjusts the timing to compensate for the stretching of the timing chain right? so it should run smoother, more efficient, and stronger? possibly rid the code of the cam sensor that cant compensate for the stretched chain?

one more question... can i check to see if the timing chain stretched by hooking up the scanner and checking my timing? and if its off would that indicate the chain stretched?
