I have a '94 XJ, 5-speed, 4.0L. Has 198,900 miles on it. First Jeep I owned, and I love it!!!
Planning on lifting it a few inches, someday.
My question is: The other day I was driving, not beating on it, but I started to hear a small "tink" noise when I was in first and started driving. Then I noticed that there was a "whine", and a vibration rumble when I tacted it out a bit, all these noises are coming from where the clutch is. Except the vibration rumble, that seems to be coming from the entire drive train. I plan on replaceing the clutch but just wanted to see is I'm going in the right direction.
Thanks,
J

Crawl under and check out the U-joints as well. They make a ting noise, and vibrate stuff if bad? Worth a shot. Did the feel and action of the clutch change?

I have had them ting as well, when you put power to the throwout bearing. The bad vibration seems to be U-joint thing to me.

I'm going to check out the front end and drive shaft tomorrow. Hopefully if I can get my ***** out of bed early enough, I'll drop the tranny, and see what the clutch looks like. I've done a clutch job in a Chevy s-10, so kinda know what I'm doing. If it looks bad, I'm just going to replace it with new clutch kit.
Thanks for all,
J
Thanks for all,

Go to Pepboys and get a LUK clutch kit.
I got some no-name clutch from Oreilly's when I swapped out my engine, and after driving in traffic, the disk would swell, and it wouldn't fully disengage. I had to drop it again and swap it out.

Went to pepboys and got the LUK clutch Kit. Also drained the tranny and going to drain rear diff. Got tranny out today, tough job when your by yourself! Clutch looked old, clutch disc was all scored and cracked and the throwout bearing was very dry, when I spun it, it felt like metal on metal, all the old grease was dry and flaking off. Also found when I was taking the drive shaft out, that the rear u-joint was busted up alittle, when I removed it, it just fell apart.
So, I won't be able to get back to it till next Saturday, anyone got any helpfull hints reinstalling the tranny?
Thanks,
J

I have removed by myself the 5 speed trans out of my 1989 Cherokee a few times over the 20 years that I have owned it.
I use a hydraulic floor jack to remove and install the bell housing, transmission and transfer case in one piece.
I look inside the installed clutch disc and pressure plate to see how the clutch disc splines line up and rotate the front shaft splines on the trans in the same position so that everything lines up on assembly. I also put the transmission in gear, so that I can turn the output shaft, in case the splines don't line up and need to be turned a little bit on assembly.
I basically balance the bell housing, transmission and transfer case assembly on the jack and then very carefully jack it up into position. I then roll the jack foreward to mate the bell housing to the engine.
Think the job through and take your time.
You can do it.

This is good advice here- put it in first, and leave the rear shaft in.
Be sure to have your flywheel turned. I wouldn't install a clutch unless I had the flywheel turned (vehicles I own and drive, that is). Take it to a machine shop- don't let the clowns at the parts house do it. A brake lathe is just that- it's for brakes.

I concur with all the advice the guys have given you. It also sounds like you had a combination of problems causing your noises. Throw out bearing, clutch, u-joints. I bet she drives like a dream once you have all of that fixed.
