96 Cherokee is hard to get in gear. Especially 2 and reverse.I'm sure my clutch is not completely disengaging because it slides right in gear when I shut down motor. Clutch and slave is not that old.is there a good way to bleed clutch?

 

Are you using Pennzoil Synchromesh, is the fluid up to the proper level & clean? Reverse is a straight gear, you have to come to a complete stop before shifting. When second gear goes, it's the synchronizer. In the forward gears you can shift without usng a clutch, it's only there so you can disconnect the power and come to a stop.

 

Regardless of fluid, the clutch should indeed disengage completely and there should be no difference between engine running or not if you're standing still with your foot to the floor.

I've yet do actually do any work to my clutch but I'd certainly start with bleeding it. I haven't found any decent write-ups but apparently there's a bleeder screw on the slave cylinder.

 

im using red line trans fluid. reverse grinds until i put it in first then reverse.sometimes it wont go in any gear until i stop engine then it goes right in.ive never heard of changing gears without pushing in clutch.also if i raise rearend start engine then push in clutch the wheels still turn very slightly.this makes me think clutch isnt right.

 

You can change gears without the clutch when the engine is off. If you raised the rear and the wheels still turn when the clutch is depressed you have definitely confirmed it isn't disengaging completely.

So I have replaced my clutch I save cylinder and master cylinder for the clutch. Won't go into any gear when the engine is running will try to shift into reverse but grinds and when it actually is driving it will try to shift out of 5th but kind of slips. Have blood the system quite a few times but I don't know what's going on. Help is very much recommended

 

Does the clutch pedal feel good? You know, not having a bunch of play.
Try this. Pump the clutch pedal about 50 times and walk away for 20 minutes. Is that better?

A few years ago I read a thread on this subject. The cause was determined to be the master cylinder didn't have enough stroke to move enough fluid to fully work the slave cylinder.

That's one possible cause.
Another one is wear in the pedal end of the clutch master cylinder push rod where it links to the clutch pedal.

 

Gotta try the pump and walk away deal first.

Another thing that can happen, and we don't know the history of your repairs as to why, but the clutch pedal can tear up at the top.

 

If you DO need to move more fluid, there are other MCs that can be made to work. The bigger you go, the stiffer the pedal though...
