Default clunking when in 4hi and 4lo

Im a first time jeep owner just bought a 95 cherokee sport , runs good drive nice but when i put it in 4 hi or 4 lo i get a clunking sound when i gas it but if i ease in to it i dont here it and it seems to work . I also here and feel a slight bump once and a while at about 30 mph to 45 mph didnt go any faster. I stoped using the 4x4 till i can figure this out . Dont here anything in 2wd . Any help would be great ,snows piling up outside.

Sounds like a stretched transfercase chain, it'll need replacement. They run around $100 from places like Quadratec.

Yup, your going to have to drop the transfer case. Get a transmission Jack if your going to do it alone, that puppy weighs like 70 pounds...

You don't have to drop your transfercase. if you follow directions for an SYE kit they have you leave the transfecase in the vehicle and just open it up from underneath.

http://advanceadapters.com/product/2464/50-7906.html
Click on the manual on this page and it will tell you what you are getting into.

It may be cheaper to go to the junkyard and get a used tranfercase.

True, but it's so much easier to do it on a work bench, not underneath a vehicle, putting a crick in your neck, getting mud in your eyes, smashing your digits on hidden dangers.......
