Default clunk in the rear end!

i have a noise in the rear axle (or around that area) it sounds like a clunk and i can feel something moving

it sounds kinda when a u joint goes bad, i took the d shaft off and the u joints were good, checked the tranny mount and it was good, i also checked the leafspring bushings and the u bolts...everything is good...

so im between

wheel bearings,t case having some slack..or the rear end having a lot of play in the ring and pinion...

i dont offroad this xj so it cant be the tcase...but what do i know...

any ideas?

Default does it slow down right away when you let off the throttle?

My old car would slow down and eventually stop when the wheel bearings went out. the clunk could be a slipped roller bearing out of its cage. Check it out first..

Did you check the slip yoke and relube it before putting the drive shaft back in?

If it clunks when you start and stop, it's probably the slip yoke. Easy fix, just take the driveshaft off, clean and grease the snot out of it, then reinstall.

If it is doing it at other times I would check the bearings. Just lift the wheel off the ground and see if there is any play in it.
